Michael Bean

Executive Director: Michael Bean

B.A., Psychology, San Jose State University, California. Michael has been the Executive Director of Addiction Counseling and Education Services, Inc., now doing business as EMERGENCE, since 1986. In addition to his responsibilities as the Executive Director for the agency, Michael also provided group and individual counseling services to clients as a CADC II Counselor until 1996. The increased demand on his time as Executive Director precluded his continuing involvement with direct services to clients. Prior to joining the agency in 1984, Michael's experience included seven years as Primary Care Coordinator at the Veterans Medical Center, Palo Alto, California; Western Regional Psychiatric Center, Stanford University Training Center; Medical Psychiatric Technician, United States Army; and Zonta's Children Center, San Jose, California. Michael is a Founding Board Member of Committed Partners for Youth; past member of Eugene Downtown Rotary; Lane Transit District (LTD) Budget Subcommittee; and a member of the committees for the development of ASAM and Oregon Administrative Rules for the State of Oregon Office of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Programs. He also has participated in the development and support of Eugene First Night, Eugene Domestic Violence Panel, Chairman of the Lane County Consortium of Alcohol and Drug Providers, and past Chairman of Lane Individual Practice Association (LIPA) Panel of Alcohol and Drug Providers. He has been instrumental in assuring that clinical staff members at EMERGENCE obtain certification as alcohol and drug counselors through the State of Oregon and in 2001 received the "program Development Award" from National Association of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Counselors (NAADAC), and the Addiction Counselor Certification Board of Oregon (ACCBO).

SCOTT MILLER

Fiscal Director: Scott Miller

BSBA Accounting, Regents College Degree Program, New York. Scott has been with Addiction Counseling and Education Services, Inc., EMERGENCE, since 1996, as the Fiscal Director working closely with the Executive Director in the planning and implementation of the budgets for the agency. He has been working at the "business end" of non-profit healthcare for the past eighteen years, including Controller for Catholic Charities Developmental Disabilities Services in Albany, New York. His charge at EMERGENCE: ensure adequate financing and information systems to support agency operations and to provide realistic budgets that provide for ongoing growth and development. "Financing treatment in the face of limited funding challenges those in the non-profit healthcare field to control costs, discover new sources of revenue, and to continually examine business practices to ensure that the highest-quality services can be delivered economically." In addition to all of these responsiblities, Scott serves as the EMERGENCE "guru" of all things computer and assists all staff members in accomplishing their goals while providing services to our clients.

Nancy Coons

Administrative Director: Nancy Coons

B.S., University of California, Berkeley. After her graduation from UCB, Nancy worked in the Dean's Office of Education and Counseling Psychology at the University. Her husband's law career brought her to Eugene, Oregon, in 1968, where she focused on the raising of two daughters. Prior to joining the staff at Addiction Counseling and Education Services, Inc., now EMERGENCE, in 1986, Nancy was involved with community volunteer activities including Charter Member of Assistance League of Eugene, President of the Board of Directors, Eugene Symphony Association, 1975 to 1980, and member of Founding Board of Directors for Committed Partners for Youth. During her twenty-one year hsitory with EMERGENCE, Nancy has worked closely with Executive Director, Michael Bean, and the Board of Directors in the growth and development of the many treatment locations, as well as coordinating among the staff members to foster healthy communication between the support staff and clinical staff as well as creating a welcoming environment for EMERGENCE clients.

MOUREEN JENNE

Clinical Supervisor: Maureen Jenne

M.S., Counseling Psychology, University of Oregon; CADC III. Maureen was raised in Southeast Alaska and has lived in Oregon for over 30 yearrs. She has worked in group homes, been a school counselor, provided mental health crisis intervention for adults, provided outpatient, intensive outpatient and family counseling, developed a program for adults raised around addiction, supervised adult and youth services as director of a medium-sized non-profit agency, taught addiction counselors at Lane Community College and University of Oregon. As the EMERGENCE Clinical Supervisor, she identifies, arranges and provides training to counseling staff and support for best practice services to EMERGENCE clients. She has a passion for Hellinger Family Constellation work which is an effecitve way to get resolution of multi-generational family problems often in one session; these services are provided at EMERGENCE by Maureen, Michele Tantriella-Modell and Bonnie McIrvin. Maureen likes to notice each counselor's genius and share them with other staff members as another way to enhance what EMERGENCE offers to clients we serve.

 

DAVID HICKERSON

Program Director: David Hickerson

B.S., Psychology, Western Baptist College, Salem, Oregon; CADC II. David joined the staff at Addiction Counseling and Education Services, Inc., EMERGENCE, in 1983 and has been a Program Director for fifteen years. He began his alcohol and drug counseling career at Marion/Polk/Yamhill Council on Alcoholism and in the early nineteen-eighties developed one of the first DUII (Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants) programs based in the State of Oregon. David worked as a Counselor for this agency for many years prior to stepping into his role as Program Director for our treatment locations in Albany, Corvallis, Lebanon and Florence. He has a specialty in Motivational Interviewing, Motivational Enhancement Therapy and Clinical Supervision and oversees the agency's Continuous Quality Assurance program. Dave has a strong commitment to removing barriers to treatment for clients by offering treatment services closer to clients' homes thereby producing better outcomes. As the agency has grown and added treatment locations in Lane, Linn and Benton Counties, David has been invaluable in providing on-going support and supervision to the staff members in each of those locations so that the services given to clients can continue to be at the highest level of compliance with State of Oregon ASAM requirements.

DAVID FISHER

Program Director: David Fischer

B.S. Honors Degree, Philosophy, London City University, England; Associates Degree, Business Administration, London City University. Following obtaining his degrees in England, David completed continuing education courses at Gonzaga University and University of Alaska in human services and addictions. David brought thirteen years of social service experience with youth and adults experiencing addiction issues or chronic mental illness to his employment in 1992 with Addiction Counseling and Education Services, Inc., now EMERGENCE, and he has nineteen years of experience managing substance abuse programs. David's expertise lies in the areas of chemical dependency, program design and implementation of diverse treatment modalities which include detox, inpatient rehabilitation, intensive day treatment, standard outpatient and intensive outpatient chemical dependency treatment. He maintains current CADC certification through the State of Oregon and NCAC certification through the National Association of Alcohol and Drug Accreditation of Counselors.

MICHELE TANTRIELLA

Program Director and Mental Health Specialist: Michele Tantriella-Modell

M.S., Counseling Psychology, University of Oregon; LPC, CADC I. Michele has recently completed licensing requirements as a Licensed Professional Counselor through the State of Oregon. Michele has additional training and experience in gambling addictions and crisis counseling, art therapy, domestic violence intervention (the NOVA program which she developed and implemented at EMERGENCE until the program was closed in 2003), and addictions treatment with DUII (Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants), women and offender populations. She has facilitated a skill-building process group for adults from dysfunctional family backgrounds and has provided trainings to EMERGENCE counselors on varied topics. Michele provides individual mental health assessment and counseling to clients. When needed, she provides consultation to EMERGENCE counselors regarding treatment activities and strategies for clients with mental health needs. Michele frequently co-facilitates State-wide trainings to persons working toward certification as alcohol and drug counselors in the State of Oregon.

TERRI MCCLAFLIN

Program Director: Terri McClaflin

CADC I. Terri began her counseling career at Addiction Counseling and Education Services, Inc., EMERGENCE, as an intern while pursuing her education. She has been employed with the agency for six years and has provided direct counseling services to clients for five and a half years. In 2005 Terri was promoted into the position as Program Director for two treatment programs, Bridge and Focus, which are offered in one of the Eugene locations. In addition to her responsibilites as the Program Director, Terri serves as the Court Liaison for the Lane County Drug Court LIFE Program. Terri has had extensive experience working with clients who have incurred legal challenges due to the use of alcohol and other drugs. She provides inspiration and direction in the development of program standards using current best practice research to support clients in achieving sobriety and a recovery-focused lifestyle. Terri is a member of the Lane County Drug Court Advisory Board and participated in the Lane County Early Childhood System Development Project (SIG) in South Lane County.

Andrea Miles

Site Supervisor and Quality Assurance Officer: Andrea Miles

M.S.W., Social Work, Portland State University, Portland, Oregon; M.B.A., Business Administration, City University, Seattle, Washington. Andrea joined EMERGENCE in 2006, bringing nineteen years of experience in the Chemical Dependency Field with a specialty in Motivational Interviewing. Her experience includes the role of Executive Director for two agencies in the State of Minnesota, "New Beginnings" and "Rivers of Hope." Her extensive work experiences include Children's Protective Services, North Dakota; Operations Manager, Providence Medical Center, Portland, Oregon; Addictions Treatment Intake Coordinator and Counselor, and Medical Social Worker, Portland/Vancouver VA Medical Center; Adoptions and Child Welfare, Los Angeles County, California. Andrea initially worked in a relief counselor capacity with EMERGENCE; her skills as a trainer/teacher and clinical supervisor resulted in her promotion into her current position in which she provides clinical file review, case staffing, student coordination and quality assurance compliance for EMERGENCE.

Tom Buhler

Site Supervisor: Tom Buhler

A.A.S., Oregon Block Transfer and Associates Degree, Legal Assistant. Graduate with honors, Portland Community College, Portland, Oregon. When Tom joined Addiction Counseling and Education Services, Inc., EMERGENCE, in 2006, he worked as a Counselor in Focus, the EMERGENCE treatment program provided to the Lane County Drug Court. Recently Tom moved into the EMERGENCE program as the Counselor working with men who are incarcerated at Lane County's Forest Work Camp. Prior to coming to EMERGENCE, Tom worked in the indigent criminal defense field for over twelve years in both Multnomah and Washington counties in Oregon. Tom's strong belief, based upon his observations and experience over the years in the criminal justice system, is that alcohol and drug treatment clearly works in reducing recidivism and in changing lives. Tom moved to Eugene and changed careers in order to become a part of that solution at EMERGENCE. In addition to his counseling duties, Tom provides on-site supervision as the Site Supervisor to his colleagues at the Eugene downtown location. He currently is awaiting testing for his CADC I cerfification for the State of Oregon.
